Thurs. July 25

Your unit test is tomorrow morning!

Also due for tomorrow, your work on the relationship between the US and North Korea.

For Monday, you have your essay on North Korea due.  “How has your perception of the DPRK changed (if at all) after watching the documentary?  Explain using examples from “Departures.”

Here are some tips on the structure:

Persuasive Essay Outline

Introductory Paragraph

  • Grab the reader’s attention by using a “hook.”
  • Give an overview of the argument.
  • Close with a thesis statement that reveals the position to be argued.

Body Paragraphs

  • Each body paragraph should focus on one piece of evidence.
  • Within each paragraph, provide sufficient supporting detail.

Concluding Paragraph

  • Restate and reinforce the thesis and supporting evidence.

Tues. July 23

There is no limit to the length of your reflection on Nanking.  It’s all about quality, not quantity.  What I’m looking for is a response to what you experienced watching the movie.  How did the characters/people make you feel?  Which specific ones?

As for tomorrow’s quiz, it’ll only be on 5.3.  There will not be any questions on 5.2.

Mon. July 8

Tomorrow’s open notebook test (no photocopies or typed out and printed material aside from the notes I have provided) will take place AFTER the break.

Here are the questions you need to do for homework.  MAKE SURE YOU EXPLAIN WHY for #8 (I forgot to mention this in class).

1.Why did a trade imbalance exist before the 1830s?

2.Why was the opium trade important for Britain?

3.Who did the Emperor appoint to end the opium trade?

4.In what ways did the opium trade hurt China?

5.What did China lose in the treaties?

6.What made the treaties “unequal”?

7.Why were people in China discontented with the Manchu (Qing) rulers?

8.If the word “imperialism” is defined as “the policy of seeking to dominate the affairs of weaker countries,” do you think Chinese today are justified in saying that China suffered from Western “imperialism” begun by the British?
